It’s easy to install crown molding.  Of course, the process will vary a little, depending on what type you choose.  For this article, I’d like to stick to the simplest type to put up, the self adhesive type.  It has a peel and stick back and it’s generally made of dense Styrofoam, so it’s a super light, no nail, no miter cut option.  Let’s look at the process in more detail for this super easy to install crown molding that’s inexpensive and will spruce up your home.

  • No Miter Cuts

Many of the easy to install crown molding products come with pre-cut corners, both inside and outside.  This is not quite a no cut product, but it’s close, since the cuts can be made as straight only, a much easier way to cut the product.

  • Pick a Corner

Start by putting up either an inside or outside corner.  Use the no nail peel and stick backing to hold it in place.  Make sure your first piece is right where it needs to be.  Your first piece is actually the most important for easy to install crown molding, so take your time.  Work until you get to an edge, using the self adhesive backing to hold the product in place.

  • Make a Cut

Now, you will most likely need to make a cut with your easy to install crown molding.  Luckily, you can make a straight cut.  Since you are using a dense Styrofoam product, it can be easily cut with a sharp utility knife.  Use a square to make sure your cut is true and accurate.  Not having to make miter cuts will save you lots of time.

  • The Next Corner

Place up the next corner for your easy to install crown molding.   Follow the same process over again until you are back to where you started.  Be sure you measure carefully.  Be sure you have enough inside and outside corners to complete the job.

  • Cover Joint and Cracks

For a more complete look, be sure to fill in any small joint cracks with either spackling or caulking, to the manufacturer’s recommendations.  This will give your easy to install crown molding a professional look.

  • Paint It

It’s time to finish the job.  Use a quality latex primer, following the recommendations of the manufacturer.  Follow up with a high quality latex paint.  Make sure you use the primer, since the dense Styrofoam isn’t the easiest surface for paint to adhere to.  This will make your easy to install crown molding look great for years to come.
