Thoughts About Joint Replacement Surgery

We are fortunate to be living in a time when joints can be replaced, and thus relieve us of pain and restore mobility.  Joint replacement becomes necessary often because arthritis has developed to such an extent that the joint can no longer function properly and the pain of even simple movement becomes intolerable.  Sometimes joints are replaced because of injury or malformation.

Joint Replacement does not restore the joint to the condition of a perfect normal joint.  It does however relieve pain and restore mobility to the point when most normal day-to-day activities are once again possible.  The most common joints replaced are those in the hip and the knee.  Work is also done on elbows and shoulder.  Joint replacement is done by orthopedic surgeons.

There are several points that should be kept in mind for those that are considering surgery.

1.  The better your physical condition is before the surgery, the better it will be after the surgery.  This means that it is wise to do all you can to get and keep your body as healthy as possible.  Eat well, keep your mind occupied, and get as must physical activity as possible.  Make sure that you keep your weight within a healthy range.  Excess weight is often the cause of extra wear and tear on joints.

2.  Understand that the operation itself is not the total solution.  After surgery you must begin and continue a regime of therapy and exercise, as instructed by your physician.  This will be provided and supervised by a physical therapist.  It may need to be continued for several months, depending on your physical condition, and the surgery itself.  Those that are very elderly and those that suffer from other medical ailments tend to heal more slowly.

3.  Be aware that the surgery that is most successful involves only one joint.  Talk this over with your doctor so you understand exactly what results you can expect.  Often people surpass there doctor’s expectations.  Try to be one of these people.  Much of the success of the surgery is up to you.

4.  Artificial joints do not last forever.  They wear out depending on how they are used.  If overactive people insist on returning to their old overactive lifestyle, artificial joints will wear out faster.  Artificial joints may need to be replaced after twenty years, or even after ten years.

Your doctor will decide if you are a suitable candidate for joint replacement surgery.
