How To Use A Dual Flush Toilet Conversion Kit

Any old toilet can be converted into a dual flush with one of these kits. They typically cost less than $30 and will pay for themselves in only a few weeks. So how hard is it to use a dual flush conversion kit? Not hard at all. All you have to do is flip the handle up for 1/2 flush and down for a full flush. A standard 1.6 gallon low flush toilet will use only .8 gallons when the handle is flipped upward, as seen in the photo below.

Here is a YouTube video of a dual flush toilet installed in a 1.6 gallon per flush model. It takes about fifteen to twenty minutes to install the dual flush retrofit kit. The model seen in this video is made by EnviroFlush and has been in use in my home for over a year now. This is the most used toilet in the house, with several flushes per day over a year and it is working fine.

How much money will a dual flush conversion kit like the one in this video save you? For one thing it depends on how much you spend on water. Where I live water costs about $10 per 1000 gallons.  If you were to flush eight times a day using the low flush position of the toilet handle, which is not unreasonable for a small family, you would save 6.4 gallons a day.  Every 156 days I save $10.  For larger families or those living in places where water costs even more, the payback would be even greater.  Many cities calculate sewage fees in proportion to the home’s water bill. In that case you would save on both the water bill and the sewage bill.

Going Green, Another Reason To Convert Your Toilets To Dual Flush

In addition to saving money you will be making your home more green. From a financial perspective, green homes sell for anywhere from ten to twenty percent more than traditional homes. Your home’s impact on the planet will be reduced as well as reducing the amount of CO2 produced when water is pumped to your home by equipment using engines or motors.

I’m very happy with my dual flush conversion kit. I now have one in both of my toilets and have noticed a big reduction in our water bill. I give the EnviroFlush two thumbs up.

Just a side note. Since seeing my conversion kit a family member who owns a small motel ordered a couple dozen of them and installed them in all of his motel rooms to cut his water bill.
