Whether you believe in ghosts or not the new TV shows that feature real life ghost hunters are somewhat entertaining to watch. These teams use high tech ghost hunting devices to locate restless spirits who have not yet passed on to the afterworld. These intrepid ghost hunters creep around in supposedly haunted houses and graveyards looking for things most of us would prefer to avoid at all costs.

So what are the gadgets that ghost hunters typically use and can you buy them for your own use? Surprisingly there are several very high tech ghost hunting devices four under $100.

EMF Detectors For Ghost Hunting

Many of those who believe in ghosts think that they hive off electromagnetic energy. An EMF detector is a hand held sensor that picks up these fields, as well as those produced by electrical wiring, motors, and other electrical devices. These scan for energy in the 50-1000 ELF or extremely low frequency radio range and also in the 1khz to 20khz VLF or very low frequency radio range.  They typically display readings in mG or milligauss. These devices are very common with ghost hunters.

Ghost Hunting Temperature Sensors

Many ghost hunters believe that spirits leave trails of cold air throughout a haunted house or cause cold spots in rooms. To detect these there are a couple of options. The most expensive on is a Digital Thermal Imaging Camera. These cost as much as $4000.  Another option is an infrared thermometer such as the TempTestr. You simply aim these at the area you want to check and press a switch for an instant temperature reading.

Infrared Cameras

Some ghost hunters use cameras that have been modified for infrared photos. You can buy gray market cameras from overseas or modify those sold here to take infrared photos. Older video cameras may be infra red capable but have since been replaced by those that have this feature disabled due to privacy issues. It was discovered that these cameras could “see” through clothing.

Magnetic Flux Density Meters

Another ghost hunting electronic device is the magnetic flux density meter. These measure fluctuations in EMF in a room and a burst mode detects rapid changes in the magnetic flux in an area. Often these feature a recording mode that can record changes in an area. The one seen below has a red back lit display so you can read it in the dark.

Pocket Light Meters

Another electronic device used by ghost hunters is a light meter. These can detect very small changes in background lighting, such as those that may be caused by a translucent ghost changing the field of light in a room.

Night Vision Gear For Ghost Hunting

Night vision gear is very popular with ghost hunters. They can observe a room in total darkness for the presence of spirits that may be scared away by lights. Below is a popular night vision scope that many ghost hunters use:
