Forms of Discouragement

Discouragement comes in many different forms, especially if you are working towards a goal or goals that you value highly. It could be goals like running your own business, or being a hreat athlete. Nothing comes easy and at some point we all have to deal with discouragement.

One of the many forms of discouragement is failure. You fail to meet your goals and at that point, you get discouraged. You feel stupid, and you may want to give up at this point. It is best to realise at this point that success in any field takes a lot of hard work and that discouragement is a part of the path towards your goals.

Another form would be downers, or people that will try to stop you from pursuing your goals. These are the type of people that will tell you that it will not work for you, or that you have to find another passion. They may even resort to insults like telling you that you are stupid to have such a passion. All you can do is ignore them and push on. There are many different reasons they come after you like that. One of them is that misery loves company. Maybe they’re not completely satisfied with their lives so they try to bring you down. They get some kind of solace from it. But in the end, it is your life, not theirs.

Perhaps one form of discouragement that is often ignored is yourself. You may feel a little overwhelmed by ideas of actually pursuing your goals and perhaps you don’t feel quite up to it. It is something new to you. The only thing you can do is to go for it. The only way you can overcome this kind of anxiety is if you acquaint yourself with the work you are going to do. As soon as you get used to the work at hand, the more confident you feel and you will be less of a discouragement to yourself.

There are a lot of discouraging things we may say to ourselves. We may use our past as a way to discourage us. Or we will find every kind of reason we can to believe that we won’t reach our goals. Yes, there is a chance that we will actually fail, in fact the chance of failing is a lot bigger than your chance of succeeding, but if it is worth it to you, would you let that stop you?

I too am a believer in positive thinking. It is easier to prevent discouragement when you don’t allow fear of failure to stop you from trying. There is always another opportunity to change your life for the better.
